The basking shark is a coastal-pelagic species found throughout the world’s arctic and temperate waters. In the western Atlantic, it ranges from Newfoundland to Florida and southern Brazil to Argentina and from Iceland and Norway to Senegal, including the parts of the Mediterranean in the eastern Atlantic.

The megamouth shark (Megachasma pelagios) is a species of deepwater shark. It is rarely seen by humans and is the smallest of the three extant filter-feeding sharks alongside the whale shark and basking shark. Since its discovery in 1976, few megamouth sharks have been seen, with fewer than 100 specimens being observed or caught.

There have been many cases of basking sharks being mistaken for sea monsters over the centuries. This is because, when a basking shark decays, the lower gills and jaw rots away leaving just a small head on what looks like a long, serpent-like neck. We are the no1 worldwide operator to see basking sharks in the biggest basking shark hotspot. We can see sharks from April to October but have a short consistent time from July-Sept in the Hebrides. Basking shark, huge, sluggish shark of the family Cetorhinidae, usually classified as one species (Cetorhinus maximus). Named for its habit of floating or slowly swimming at the surface, the basking shark inhabits temperate regions of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans. The basking shark is the second largest fish in our oceans - its relative the whale shark being the biggest. Despite their size, basking sharks only feed on zooplankton which they filter out of the water, swimming slowly back and forth with their enormous mouths wide open. The basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus) is an enormous plankton-eating shark. After the whale shark, it is the second-largest living shark. The shark takes its common name from its habit of feeding near the sea surface, making it appear to bask in the sun.
